NSW Roller Ski Championships 2017
Race Report - 2017 - NSW Roller ski Championships
Western Sydney Parklands hosted the inaugural NSW Roller ski championships on Sunday 29th October 2017.
A beautiful sunny morning greeted competitors from around Sydney, Melbourne and even the Snowy Mountains’ Charlotte’s Pass.
Roller skiing is the summer equivalent to cross country skiing. The roller ski has wheels at either end for rolling on tarmac. The skier/skater uses poles and pushing with their legs to propel them forward. The technique is almost identical to cross country skiing and is used by cross country skiers to train for the Winter.
Competitors skated the 3.4 km track past the trees, scrub and creeks of Western Sydney Parklands on a wonderful flat tarmac course. With 15 second intervals between participants it was a race against the clock.
The competitors varied in experience from an ex-Olympian to Jenny who put on her roller skis for the first time. Everyone had a great time and are looking forward to next year.
The winners were;
Under 17 (Women) - Lulu Miskin
Under 17 (Men) - Declan Burke
Open (Men) - Martin Abeleda
Open (Women) - Jillian Colebourn
Masters (Men) - Nour Eldin Tarraf
Masters (Women) - Jenny Kent
A huge thank-you to Parramatta City Council for permission to use the park, Snow Trek and Travel for supplying the prizes and all the volunteers who made this event happen.
