Report on NSW Branch Camp June 2016

June 12, 2016

This was the camp run by specialist guest coach, Luca Bormolini from Italy. Luca is also Australian Biathlon's appointed High Performance Coach.

The June 2016 Camp for the Sydney branch of Australian Biathlon finished today. It was very successful.
Seven training sessions were conducted by Luca Bormolini, from the evening of Friday 17 to the afternoon of  Sunday 19 June. The sessions were a mix of Roller skiing and Shooting.
We were very lucky with the weather, as rain was forecast this weekend. The heavy rain held off just long enough for us to finish our Sunday morning rollerskiing session.

Nine people attended one or more sessions.

  • Masters: Mark Elliot, John Joyce

  • Juniors: David Patterson, Alex Ellwood, Myah Walmsley

  • Experienced: Mathew Wright, Gabrielle Hawkins

  • Defence: Karl Penny (Army Reserve)

  • Come-and-Try: Frank Cao

The three Juniors attended the weekend sessions with the Masters. This was to give the Juniors  coaching before the Hotham Camp. The Juniors maintained a good level of attention in their sessions, and showed they were enthusiastic.

Luca gave the Masters and Juniors separate activities while out rollerskiing and at the Range. Everyone received adequate attention as numbers were limited to ensure each one had personal coaching attention. Luca's enthusiasm meant we started our Saturday rollerskiing session, despite the light rain. We were rewarded later with great views of Sydney Harbour as the rain stopped and the clouds lifted.

Phillip and Gen Colebourn ran the Hornsby Range efficiently, allowing good shooting training. Many of us also enjoyed a welcome lunchbreak at their home on Sunday which helped to encourage the Camp atmosphere.

The attendees found the sessions really worthwhile, and we all made a lot of progress. Luca was pleased with the Juniors as their skills at rollerskiing and shooting  improved tremendously.

Many thanks to:

  • Luca Bormolini for his great coaching

  • The Colebourn’s for organizing the logistics of the weekend, and running the Range sessions

  •  North Sydney Smallbore and Air-rifle Club for allowing us to hold the shooting at their Club, and providing some extra supervisors.

  • Australian Biathlon for supporting the event.
