Cross training in the Spring

As the snow melts it’s a good time of year to do some cross training. It refreshes the mind and the body. (Unless you are going to Europe for the Winter. In that case, get out there and rollerski).

I like to keep my cross training a little more casual with a focus on enjoying some time in the sun. It’s even better if you can do it with friends and family.

The off-season is a good time to do lots of low heart rate (zone 1 and 2) training. This will develop the cardiovascular system for endurance. Exercise should be of lower intensity to give your body time to recover. An example is going for a 2-3 hour hike.

Some ideas for cross training are:

  • Kayaking

  • Cycling

  • Hiking somewhere like Tasmania, Blue Mountains

  • Mountain biking

  • Swimming at the beach

  • Coastal walks like Bondi to Bronte

  • Yoga
