Alternative to Triathlon

It is very common for triathletes into their late 30s, 40s and 50s to find themselves struggling with reoccurring injuries. Running produces the most injuries. But, you still love to compete and you enjoy the challenge and fitness that Triathlon brings. What’s another option?

Biathlon is an exciting hybrid sport of cross-country skiing and target shooting. It has:

  • a strong Masters contingent

  • training camps

  • opportunity to compete locally, interstate and overseas

  • cool equipment

Biathlon requires fitness, skills, mind discipline, strategy and cool gear. Don’t worry if you can’t skied or haven’t fired a rifle before. We will help you attain the skills necessary.

Safety with firearms

Biathlon is a sport that involves firearms. You must be over 16 years old to use a rifle. Children of any age can use a Laser rifle.

Novices are given one on one supervision and are required to follow all instructions or they will be removed from the range. Read more about firearms licensing and safety in NSW.

Biathlon – snow meets target shooting

Competitors ski a course then enter a range where they have to shoot 5 targets at a distance of 50 metres away. Every miss is a penalty. Then they repeat the ski and shoot leg multiple times.

Summer biathlon

In the Summer we switch to rollerskis and laser rifles.

Competition and training

The Australian Biathlon Association (ABA) has members across Australia with active members training in Sydney.

Training and competitions are held in various locations around Sydney.

Rollerskiing

Sessions are held on Sunday mornings all year round.

Target shooting

Monthly supervised sessions are held at the Sydney International Shooting Centre.

Winter training and competitions

Every year Masters athletes from Sydney travel to Mt Hotham, Victoria for the annual Masters Biathlon camp. It is the highlight of the year. It caters for all abilities and is huge fun. Find out about the Masters Winter camp.

Opportunities to travel Overseas to train and compete

There is an annual European training camp in Livigno, Italy for Masters biathletes. In addition Australia always has a contingent in the Biathlon Masters International Competition in Kontiolahti, Finland.

Isn’t Biathlon running and swimming?

Nope, that’s Dualathlon. Biathlon is the Winter Olympic sport of cross country skiing and shooting.

Impact on the body

Snow skiing and roller-skiing is easier on the joints than running. So, if you can’t run then roller-skiing is a good alternative.

Roller-skiing is one of the only sports that engages the whole body; the legs, the core, the arms and the shoulders. It is very aerobic with professional cross country skiers and biathletes often having the highest VO2Max of any sport.
